What is it about?

Laser-driven shock wave generates dynamic ultrahigh pressure that reduces the intermolecular distances, and induces the interatomic bond formation between molecules. In this paper, C–C, C–O, and O–O bond formation in liquid methanol was demonstrated.

Why is it important?

The C–C, C–O, and O–O bond formation observed was not a conventional passive chemical reaction but an unprecedented active reaction. The produced molecules coincided with those predicted from the combinations of C and O of methanol. In particular, we verified the production of methoxymethanol, a hemiacetal, in liquid form.
