What is it about?

The extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving device that supports the blood oxygenation in patient hit by cardiac shock. The ECMO machine pumps oxygenated blood in the body of the patient, however establishing the correct level of flow is very challenging. In this work, we have simulated a virtual replica of the procedure. We have, for the first time, established a preliminary tool to estimate the best ECMO flow level in a patient-specific model.

Why is it important?

It is well known that the success of ECMO efficacy is determined by the clinician’s experience. If the oxygenated blood flow is too small arteries perfusion is ineffective, while, if it is too large, the heart can be damaged by the pressure increase. We propose a new mathematical model to foresee this effect and define the best level of ECMO flow to grant perfusion and, at the same time, minimize the pressure increase.
