What is it about?

The Kuramoto model is very popular for exploring the synchronization of coupled oscillators, specifically for single-mode interactions. In this paper, we explore the synchronization behavior and transitions for an interaction function consisting of a first and second Fourier mode by utilizing the collective coordinate approach.

Why is it important?

The behavior of multimodal interaction functions has not been explored very thoroughly in the past. This work shows that in a system with a two-mode interaction function, the transitions depend crucially on the coupling strengths. Interestingly, we found that the transitions between cluster states are due to the existence of coexisting states.
