What is it about?

Surpassing extremely fast speeds beyond 300 GHz has proven extremely difficult, but the latest developments in integrated circuits offer very exciting perspectives to connect these high-speed signals with optical ones. In this article we discuss current state of the art and directions that need further developments to boost this rapidly evolving young field.

Why is it important?

Integrated photonic circuits have benefited many areas of natural sciences. Adding ultra-high speed signals to the palette would significantly enrich the realm of possibilities, for modulators in communications like 6G, hyperspectral imaging, generation of carriers and ultra-high speed computing.

Perspectives

We hope this article will motivate more research in this field important for both industry and fundamental sciences.
