What is it about?

Stretchable ionotronics is a family of emerging stretchable devices that function by hybridizing ions and electrons. In this Perspective, the significant progresses of stretchable ionotronics made during its first decade are summarized with particular emphases placed on the fundamental principles and manufacturing of the devices.

Why is it important?

Stretchable ionotronics has evolved rapidly over the past decade, yet many challenges as well as new oppotunities exist. This Perspective provides an overview of the field of stretchable ionotronics, focusing on the fundamental principles and manufacturing of the devices, and is concluded with an over-the-horizon outlook discussing the remaining challenges and opportunities for further development of this exciting and fast-evolving field.

Perspectives

Despite the noteworthy encouraging progresses made during its first decade, the field of stretchable ionotronics is far from being mature, and the current laboratory technology is not ready for translation or commercialization. Many issues remain. Howover, enormous opportunities are out there as well. The coming years will witness further advents in the physics of new conceptual ionotronics, material science and manufacturing of stretchable ionotronic devices.
