What is it about?
Magnetized plasmas play an important role in spacecraft electric propulsion and space plasmas. We experimentally demonstrate that when plasmas are subject to strong non-uniform magnetic fields, plasma can be created far away from the location of energy input, in a non-intuitive fashion. This could have implications in improving our understanding of the transport of the solar wind through the Sun's magnetic funnels.
