What is it about?

Fluid flow inside plant cells is called protoplasmic streaming. For a long time (45 years) ago, the velocity distribution was experimentally measured by the Laser light scattering technique, and two different peaks were reported. Langevin and Navier-Stokes simulations successfully reproduce these experimentally observed peaks.

Why is it important?

Our simulation data indicate that the non-uniform velocity distribution is caused by the Brownian motion of fluid particles. This result implies that statistical mechanical treatment is necessary for the protoplasmic streaming and analyses its biological function.


One of the most exciting topics is to understand the interaction of fluid flow and biological materials. Our results imply that this topic can also be studied from a statistical mechanical viewpoint.
