What is it about?

This paper develops a new approach for modeling high Reynolds number turbulent flows by recasting the Navier-Stokes equations in a new form that uses the flow flexion as the primary dependent variable instead of the fluid velocity. The new form allows us to better track the evolution of sharp flow gradients in turbulent flows.

Why is it important?

The approach presented in the paper will lead to significant improvements in the turnaround time in industrial applications involving the CFD design of aircraft, ships, automobiles, energy extraction devices, etc.

Perspectives

Working on this article has helped me develop a new understanding of the energy cascade process in turbulent flows which differs from widely accepted views.
