What is it about?
This book discusses how a variety of actors in Europe are trying to improve foreign perceptions of Europe, of its nations, cities, regions and its institutions. It has a good balance of theoretical chapters (normative power, social power) and empirical studies (on cities, Europe's diplomatic service, Western and Central Europe) and innovating perspectives (the domestic dimension, networking in cultural relations).

Why is it important?
Remarkably, there is not a great deal of literature on European public diplomacy, and this book is breaking considerable new ground. With firm and policy-relevant conclusions as well as a detailed index, this is a good tool for teaching purposes.
Perspectives
Sadly, two of the best contributing authors to this book died far too young. Ellen Huijgh was 42 years old and Simon Duke 59 when they passed away in February and September 2018.
