What is it about?

Autonomous vehicles and technology in general are tools that can help to reach a sustainable mobility in the future. However, this will only be possible if their introduction is made according to a previous comprehensive analysis and under engineering principles, seeking for the benefit of society. This paper explains the most important features that characterize autonomous vehicles as well as the main requirements, challenges and opportunities linked to them.

Why is it important?

We analyze autonomous vehicles from a holistic point of view, avoiding miopic approaches. Any particular research in the field should be addressed bearing in mind the interactions among technology, mobility, economy, society, the environment, etc. Therefore, this paper provides a complete and neccesary starting point for more particular works.

Perspectives

This paper has been written after an exhaustive literature review and in-situ visits to top research centers in the field, which have provided the authors with valuable inputs to perform the critical analysis included. The fact of having received information from people / centers with very different lines of research and points of view has enriched the content of this paper. No particular lines of reasoning or interests have been specially supported, but all of them have been analyzed looking for their positive and negative aspects with the aim of drawing interesting conclusions.
