What is it about?
The work is a comparative study of the different linear estimation techniques commonly used with massive MIMO systems. Among those techniques, we used the Least Squares, the MMSE and the Kalman Filter estimators and compared their performance based on BER and EVM metrics achieved after decoding the signals with the maximum-ratio combining and the regularized zero-forcing receivers.

Why is it important?
We used the 3GPP release 15 specifications to run simulations based on the 5g New Radio standard. Those simulations were performed with the QuaDRiGa channel model for massive MIMO arrays. With this setup, we evaluate the performance of the different estimation techniques applied to common MIMO receivers and we found that depending on the estimation technique the performance of the MIMO receiver can increase or reduce.
Perspectives
This publication is meant to help in the analysis of estimation techniques for massive MIMO systems. With this study, the reader can realize the impact of the estimation technique on the performance of the system.
