What is it about?
Students with learning disabilities sometimes struggle with writing good sentences, but we don't often study the best ways to teach them this skill. Our study looked at how we might help a fifth grader with a learning disability in reading and writing write longer and more interesting sentences.

Why is it important?
Sentence writing is an important part of becoming a good writer. It's hard to write good stories and essays if someone can't write a complete sentence. However, sentence writing is not studied as often as other parts of writing. Our study fills a gap in what we know about how to teach writing to students with disabilities. Our results show that an elementary school student with learning disabilities can write longer and more interesting sentences if we teach them with a variety of techniques.
Perspectives
Teaching writing can be hard! We hope that this article gives readers some new ways to think about teaching sentence writing to students. We also hope it helps special educators feel more confident in trying out practices with their students who need help with writing.
