What is it about?
This study looked at how school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate students, and how closely their real-world practices match what they intend to do or what is considered best practice. The researchers created a checklist (called a “practice profile”) to measure whether SLPs are using different assessment approaches as part of a high-quality, comprehensive evaluation.

Why is it important?
Better evaluations lead to more accurate identification of student needs. That leads to better support and outcomes for students. The study helps schools understand where to focus training and resources.
Perspectives
This study shows that: SLPs are trying to use best practices, but may need more training, tools, or support to use them well and consistently. It highlights a common gap in many professions: Knowing what to do is not the same as being able to do it, and do it well.
