What is it about?

Children with specific learning disorders may experience difficulties in balance and visual-motor skills, which can also affect abilities related to learning. This study explores whether vestibular rehabilitation can improve these skills and compares traditional exercises with a virtual reality–based rehabilitation program.

Why is it important?

Balance and vestibular difficulties can be overlooked in children with specific learning disorders, even though these systems are closely linked to visual-motor and spatial skills used in everyday learning. Our findings highlight the importance of considering vestibular function in these children and suggest that vestibular rehabilitation may support skills that extend beyond balance alone.

Perspectives

Specific learning disorders are usually approached from an academic and cognitive perspective, while balance and vestibular function receive much less attention. Our study offers a broader perspective by showing that vestibular rehabilitation may contribute to balance and visual-motor skills that are relevant to a child’s everyday functioning and learning experience. These findings encourage us to look beyond academic performance when supporting children with learning difficulties.
