What is it about?
Electrophysiologic tests provide objective information about how the hearing system and brain respond to sound and can be especially useful when standard hearing tests cannot be completed or do not provide enough information. To gain insight into current clinical practices, this study surveyed 220 U.S. audiologists about how often they use these tests, their perceived benefits, and challenges to their use. Electrophysiologic testing was used more frequently with children than adults, with the auditory brainstem response (ABR) being the most commonly used test. Most audiologists viewed these tests as useful for at least some or most patients. However, limited time, equipment costs, reimbursement concerns, and challenges specific to different patient populations can make testing difficult to implement. Addressing these barriers through improved training, resources, and support may help expand the use of electrophysiologic testing and improve patient care.
