What is it about?

We wanted to see how script therapy can enhance communication for individuals with chronic aphasia. In this study, we applied script therapy to a patient who had been dealing with non-fluent chronic aphasia for the last 13 years. Through a short training program focused on three specific scripts, our participant significantly improved their communication skills. The intervention not only helped the patient effectively convey thoughts by incorporating script-related words but also led to increased efficiency by nearly doubling the speaking rate.

Why is it important?

You may have heard of script training as a well-known treatment approach for enhancing communication in people with aphasia. But what about its effectiveness for chronic aphasia, especially in a case where it has been 13 years since the stroke? This study delves into the application of script training in such a long-standing case of aphasia, exploring its potential impact on functional communication.

Perspectives

This research not only contributed to my academic pursuits but also forged a lifelong friendship with someone striving to improve their communication skills for the past 13 years following a stroke. Our connection grew so strong that they traveled eight hours to attend my graduation ceremony, honoring me in a way that has left me deeply grateful.
