What is it about?

Are speech-language pathologists (SLPs) prepared to address behavioral issues that may occur in their sessions? This study examined school-based SLPs' training and implementation of research-based behavioral intervention strategies.

Why is it important?

Because many students receiving services from Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) also exhibit behavioral issues, it is important that SLPs address behavioral issues with proven behavior management and intervention strategies to better serve these students; however, little is known on SLPs' experiences in working with behavior problems and how prepared SLPs are to address problem behaviors. Our findings showed that a high percentage of students within SLPs' caseloads exhibit behavior problems; specific behaviors SLPs experienced in sessions were identified. SLPs indicated having some training, most occurring after initial preparation programs, and sometimes implement research-based behavioral intervention strategies but would benefit from additional training, identifying specific future behavioral intervention strategies training that they would like to receive.

Perspectives

SLPs are often confronted with challenging behaviors during therapy sessions but don't always know how to effectively address these behaviors taking time and focus away from the intended session objectives. This article recognizes the need for school-based SLPs to receive preparation and training in research-based behavior management intervention strategies and provides helpful information to inform that preparation. It is recommended that SLPs receive training or more in-depth training in research-based behavior management intervention strategies in initial SLP preparation programs with continued professional development opportunities so a variety of problem behaviors can be effectively addressed within their sessions.
