What is it about?

Educators are increasingly interested in the effects of trauma on our students. Using Carello's (2020) work along with Universal Design for Learning and Transparency in Teaching and Learning frameworks, this article suggests dozens of practical strategies for addressing the teaching and learning needs of students who have experienced trauma.

Why is it important?

Trauma is pervasive in our society and it can have a significant effect on college students. Simple teaching strategies can mitigate the potentially negative effects of trauma on our students' learning.

Perspectives

Writing this article was transformative for me as an educator and as a person. I utilize many of the strategies suggested in the article and I have witnessed the positive effects these simple practices can have on students who are struggling with the invisible wounds of trauma. My hope is that more educators implement and research trauma-informed educational practices so we can support our students.
