Why is it important?
Training students in the assessment and treatment of "diverse" populations is an area of weakness for the field. Many practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs) report lack of confidence or adequate training in the assessment/treatment of individuals who use a language or dialect that differs from their own, which may lead to misdiagnoses and poor therapeutic outcomes. Through improving training in this particular area, we may promote better and more equitable service delivery among practicing SLPs.
