What is it about?

Services must enable students from all cultural backgrounds the ability to access reading and writing development; however, barriers exist. We review the barriers and propose the following four key guidelines that can be adopted to build culturally supportive settings: develop a shared vocabulary and accompanying concepts, curate and use culturally relevant texts, establish ongoing dialogue with key groups, and set high expectations.

Why is it important?

We live in a multi-cultural society that requires access to strong reading and writing skills; however, literacy is personal and cultural. Our paper provides guidance on ways to build and foster culturally supportive settings. We review definitions of culture and literacy, how they apply to students and those involved in skill development, and provide four practical guidelines with specific suggestions on how to implement supportive strategies.

Perspectives

By writing this article, I gained better appreciation and understanding in cultural differences and similarities. We live in a multi-cultural society and this article helped me understand how my culture and views affect me and my interactions with others, including my very supportive co-authors.
