Why is it important?
With the SLP profession in its early stages of development in Malaysia, many issues remain a dilemma for SLPs working in both the private and public sectors. Some of these issues and challenges faced by Malaysian SLPs may be familiar to SLPs in other developing countries. The challenges and concerns are described where the profession struggles yet strives to provide the best quality service in accordance to international standards.
Perspectives
In writing this article, we went through the literature on SLPs in Malaysia and comparative studies comparing practices by Malaysian and Australian SLPs. Through this, we were able to comment whether there were similarities and differences in SLP practice and how SLPs in Malaysia could learn from established modules of practice in developed countries like Australia. More importantly, we were able to delineate the challenges and provide future suggestions that could be taken to address them so as to improve the SLP services rendered to the community at large.
