What is it about?

This study explores how effective a professional development in the area of literacy assessment and intervention is to Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) working in the public schools. Following the professional development, SLPs increased in their literacy knowledge and practices.

Why is it important?

Adds to a new research base on effective professional developments and continuing education courses for SLPs. Also adds some empirical evidence that SLPs can incorporate literacy into their practices following effective professional development.

Perspectives

SLPs can and should get involved with literacy assessment and intervention when working with children in all settings. This adds to the growing body of research on effective professional development but also lends us to uphold a consistent belief that SLPs are well situated to be involved in decisions, assessment and intervention of literacy.
