What is it about?

We have conducted a wide ranging review on communication communication interventions in mechanically ventilated patients. The review includes data from 48 studies, and covers the evidence in this field over the past 45 years. We found there is a promising signal that communication interventions are feasible, have utility and are safe to undertake in the ICU context. There are a large number of communication interventions that have been trialled in the critical care setting to achieve communication however, the majority of published work are of low or very low quality. This review brings together a wide range of interventions in a challenging and growing field within Speech Pathology. As a result, we are hopeful this manuscript will serve as a catalyst for further interest and activity within intensive care settings
