What is it about?

Processing of rhythm in speech could potentially be based on basic auditory processes, or on listeners' lifelong experience with their native language, as languages differ in their rhythmic properties. In two experiments, across four languages, we find that speech rhythm perception is not affected by the native language of the listener. Rhythm processing is a fundamental function of the auditory system, which is adopted by speech processing mechanisms.
