What is it about?

Solution Focus Brief Therapy is a framework that guides children to identify stuttering problems and empowers them to implement practical and sustainable solutions, with the guidance of their SLP. In this case study, three children with various degrees of stuttering, used techniques to activate self-reflexion. At the conclusion of the study, the participants were able to generate practical solutions to manage their responses to ongoing ever-changing stuttering experiences.

Why is it important?

The findings in this case study support the conclusion that school-age children who stutter can be active participants in the implementation of their assessment and treatment plans. Solution Focused Brief Therapy questioning techniques guided children to draw from their innate problem solving skills, to find sustainable solutions, through self-assessments, self-reflexions, journaling and goal-driven actions.

Perspectives

I hope this article helps SLPs to increase their competency when working with clients who stutter. Solution Brief Therapy offers a framework that helps the client to organize and process a variety of strategies to manage their day to day challenges with communication and quality of life.
