What is it about?

Pausing in language production is a unique window to explore the real-time language processing. We have shown that the total frequency of pausing decreased with age and showed a significant gender difference in 4- to 5-year-old children. They prefered to use silent pauses and tend to produce pauses within clauses. Children's pausing frequency was closely associated with their verbal working memory and vocabulary.
