What is it about?

This article is the first of a collection of papers that focus on holistic review and graduate admission in Communication Sciences and Disorders. It provides a core conceptual framework of the foundational concepts that define holistic review and provides an overview of why these methods should be used in the field of CSD.

Why is it important?

It's important for our field to consider longstanding beliefs about what makes a successful student and future clinician, in ways that are equitable, inclusive, and promote diversity on many dimensions. Our field has been recognized, both internally and externally, as highly non-diverse and with significant disparities in gender, and race and ethnicity, just to name two. We have to continue to challenge ourselves to recognize the past but make changes for the future. This evidence-based method is one option to consider.

Perspectives

I'm excited to have this paper start the conversation that the rest of the papers will continue to spark in our field. This special forum serves as a starting point, but we have work to do. I'm looking forward to collaborating and problem-solving through presentations and conversations about changes that can be made for positive effects within the field. This work brings together my admiration for the graduate students who pursue SLP and audiology and my love for the field of CSD as a whole.
