What is it about?

It's about a green method to oxidise the primary alcohols to the corresponding carboxylic acids using molecular iodine as the catalyst. TBHP was used as oxidant and the reaction was carried out in pure water.

Why is it important?

HMF hydroxy methyl furfural an important feedstock derived from biomass can be oxidised to furan 2,5 dicarboxylic acid FDCA. FDCA is the monomer for the production of bio degradable polymer PEF, which has the potential to reshape the polymer industry in future. In short FDCA is the future remedy for plastic pollution in oceans. Its one of 12 priority chemicals designated by USA department of energy...

Perspectives

We feel its a remarkable step forward to minimise environmental worries in future from plastic pollution.
