What is it about?

usually CH...O hydrogen bond is considered to be a weak interaction that supplement other stronger interactions. in this paper we have shown that CH...O hydrogen bond can dictate the conformation of cyclitols differently in different states. In solid the cyclitol ring adopts chair conformation due to several intermolecular CH...O hydrogen bonds and in solution state cyclitol ring adopts boat conformation due to a single intramolecular CH...O hydrogen bond.

Why is it important?

We have shown that even weaker interaction such as CH...O hydrogen bond can dictate the conformational fate of molecules in solution and solids. Also they can be opportunistic depending on the state.
