What is it about?

It is about the management of fall armyworm larvae in maize crop. Fall armyworm larvae is a devastating insect which cause severe loss to the maize crop and reduce yield up to 30-40% in general. Application of 0.15 gram of grease could reduce its infestation and larvae get deterred from the plant.

Why is it important?

Still only chemicals have been found promising to kill the fall armyworm larvae, this alternative technique could help to manage the larvae and reduce crop damage. Grease is alternative option to manage fall armyworm larvae.

Perspectives

Application of small amount of grease (0.15 g) on affected maize leaf whorl could deter fall armyworm larvae effectively,”. Grease disturb the movement of larvae and it might cause irritation to them. Therefore, the larvae detect danger, feel insecure and move far away from the maize crop searching food materials. This simple but amazing technique is also cost effective and environment friendly. There is no need to apply grease on all the crop plants, treat only 5 % of plants of the whole plot with grease and you will see that within a couple of days, the armyworm larvae get disappear.
