What is it about?

The influence of several small molecules and amino acids on the early and late stage of alpha synuclein aggregation has been investigated using spectroscopy at the conventional and single molecule resolution. Arginine was found to inhibit the formation of amyloid formation by inducing a conformational change in the monomeric protein. In contrast, another amino acid glutamate facilitates amyloid fibril formation by facilitating the generation of small molecule oligomers.
