What is it about?

These two proteins in the tear are found to be dysregulated in thyroid eye disease. The direction of dysregulation is different from that in dry eye disease, which is important, because patients suffering from thyroid eye disease may also have dry eye, due to inflammation, exposure keratopathy and proptosis.

Why is it important?

Thyroid eye disease is a common autoimmune disorder in females. There is no cure for this condition, and management is targeted at complications. Understanding of how it affects tear proteins allow us to manage this condition better.

Perspectives

Since tear fluid can be non-invasively and repeatedly collected from patients. These proteins may be incorporated to tear POC devices as a 'thyroid panel'.
