What is it about?
We investigated how the precise recollection of previously encountered stimuli is associated with small dilations in pupil size. We found that during the successful recognition of previously seen words, the magnitude of pupil dilation was proportional to how precisely participants could subsequently determine the exact location where they had encountered the words.

Why is it important?
Pupil dilation during recognition of previously seen stimuli reflects underlying brain processes, and our results provide insights into the specific mechanisms of this link.
Perspectives
Understanding the exact nature of the link between pupil dilation and memory processes could enhance research on the biological underpinnings of memory by providing a new and convenient way to assess neural processing online during memory retrieval. Furthermore, it may also pave the way for using pupillometry as an online assessment tool during learning.
