What is it about?
People often assume that our perception of the world updates instantly, but this study shows that we can be slower to notice changes in complex scenes than we might expect. Using artificial intelligence-generated images that gradually shifted from one scene category (like a kitchen) to another (like a bedroom), we found that people continued to perceive the original scene even after it had changed. This delay suggests that our visual system favors stability, holding onto past interpretations to avoid constant reprocessing. In real-world situations—such as driving, navigating unfamiliar spaces, or reacting to design changes—this bias toward perceptual continuity could shape how we respond to what is around us.
