What is it about?

A corpus and experimental study examined the influence of word frequency and predictability for line-initial words. Both studies suggest that frequency and predictability influence post return-sweep fixation durations but not return-sweep targetting.

Why is it important?

This work provides important benchmark findings for models of eye movement control that intend to use frequency and predictability to simulate reading across line boundaries.

Perspectives

It is hoped that this article leads researchers to think about the ways in which lexical processing may be influenced by text layout, such as line breaks.
