What is it about?

It's about how when you activate stereotypes about aging in older adults, they obtain poorer performance.

Why is it important?

It is important because cognitive aging may be amplified (or even created sometimes) by effects of age-based stereotypes.

Perspectives

The original contribution of these studies are in the mechanisms they reveal about how age-based stereotype threat impairs older adults' cognitive capacities. In particular, this occurs via older adults' selecting and executing more poorly existing strategies (i.e., stereotypes lead people to use different, less efficient mechanisms to accomplish cognitive tasks).
