What is it about?

This research study seeks to understand how professionals in the addictions field are being psychologically impacted by the unanticipated deaths of their clients due to overdose. Given that overdose deaths continue to climb in the United States, the stresses of this unique kind of grief need to be understood and mitigated.

Why is it important?

With overdose deaths in the United States increasing to over 95,000 per year during COVID, the likelihood of professionals in the field of addictions being directly impacted by the loss of their clients by overdose is high. As with other helping professions, continued exposure creates greater risk for secondary traumatic stress and burnout.
