What is it about?

The Spanish version of the Protective Factors Survey (S-PFS) has 20 questions and is easy to use. The S-PFS assesses 5 protective factors in families: Family functioning, concrete support, social support, nurturing and attachment, and knowledge of parenting/child development. The S-PFS is free, valid, reliable, and can be used by any program serving Spanish-speaking families.

Why is it important?

Most parenting programs use surveys to measure whether their services work for families. Programs assess parenting needs and strengths, and whether families improve over time. There are some Spanish translations of existing surveys, but few have been tested for use with Spanish-speaking families. Some families are confused by the Spanish translations. The S-PFS tool is one of the first to test its translation with families who speak Spanish. The S-PFS is similar to the English version of the PFS and can be used with Spanish-speaking families.

Perspectives

More than 20 service providers and researchers crafted the Spanish version of the Protective Factors Survey (S-PFS). The S-PFS had seven rounds of revisions before the final draft.
