What is it about?

Only 58% of children were considered ready for school in an epidemiological sample of students of public preschool in Brazil. High-quality preschools seem to be a protective factor only for at risk for poor academic achievement (OR = 1.22). The prioritization of high-quality preschools could mitigate risk factors at the family and socioeconomic levels, increasing the chances for academic success.

Why is it important?

This underscores the need for investments in early childhood education, especially in improving the quality of public preschools, to support long-term academic and social development, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Perspectives

We must recognize the significant concern that nearly half of the children entering preschool are not yet ready for school. This highlights the need for urgent attention and targeted interventions to ensure all children have the foundation they need for academic success at high quality preschools.
