What is it about?

Adults who identify as LGBTQ+ often experience stress related to their identity, which can be exacerbated by family conflict. This paper examines how different types of identity stressors and family conflict may associate with increased suicide risk.

Why is it important?

It is important to identify what types of experiences are related to suicide thoughts and behaviors in LGBTQ+ adults since they also experience high rates of suicide compared to heterosexual adults. Our findings show that stress from worrying about whether one will be accepted as an LGBTQ+ person is associated with more frequent thoughts of suicide, especially for individuals who also have greater conflicts with family.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great experience as my co-authors are two former graduate students. I appreciate their passion for the topic of suicide prevention in LGBTQ+ adults and adolescents.
