What is it about?

Nonbinary people (i.e., those who do not exclusively identify as men or women) experience unique stressors due to living in a society organized by the gender binary. We conducted focus groups and interviews with 29 nonbinary adults (60% people of color). We found that nonbinary people frequently are misgendered, invalidated, and tasked with educating others about their identity.

Why is it important?

The added layers of daily stressors that nonbinary people face takes a mental and emotional toll. Understanding these unique stressors helps explain why nonbinary people are vulnerable to mental health risks and provides opportunities to try to decrease these stressors.

Perspectives

As a team of nonbinary researchers, we hope this article validates the experiences of other nonbinary people and brings a better understanding to the unique challenges that nonbinary people face.
