What is it about?

This study introduces the Latinx Barriers to Accessing Telepsychology Services (Latinx BATS) questionnaire, a tool designed to identify obstacles faced by Latinx caregivers when seeking telepsychology services for their children. Through surveys with 511 caregivers, the research highlights key barriers like cultural mismatches, privacy concerns, and technological challenges. It also explores differences in how English- and Spanish-speaking caregivers experience these barriers.

Why is it important?

Telepsychology can improve access to mental health services, but it isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Latinx families often encounter unique barriers, and understanding these is crucial to creating equitable mental health care. This work provides a validated tool to assess these challenges, paving the way for targeted strategies to improve service access and effectiveness for this underserved group.

Perspectives

Our team was motivated to address the growing disparities in telepsychology service access during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research documents the development and evaluation of a culturally responsive tools that can help highlight and tackle barriers impacting Latinx families, ensuring that mental health services are more inclusive and effective. We hope this tool serves as a step toward reducing health inequities and fostering more accessible care for marginalized communities.
