What is it about?

To get better in a skill, you need to keep practicing but many people quit before they get there. Dropout is huge problem in online learning, school, sports and hobbies. In this paper we model how skill and practice reciprocally affect each other and investigate the conditions and interventions which helps prevent dropout.

Why is it important?

We integrate existing literature on learning curves, forgetting curves and motivation in a dynamical model. We show how the shape of the learning curve influences dropout. Tasks which are too complex, not suited for the level of the learner and do not provide informative feedback are particularly risky.

Perspectives

The topic of the article will be very relatable to anyone who, like me, has excitedly picked up a new hobby only to give up after a few weeks. Beyond the equations, I hope the reader finds some insight into how to structure the learning of new skills to be more effective and joyful so they do not drop out.
