What is it about?

Sexual desire is both considered a key component of sexual development and wellbeing and is associated with shame and risk for young women. This qualitative research study explores how young women experience sexual desire and how their experiences are shaped through this contradictory and inequitable social context.

Why is it important?

Psychological research on women's desire has tended to focus on sexual dysfunction and sexual behaviors. There is little understanding of young women's own experiences feeling and acting on sexual desire. My findings highlight the importance of desire for young women's lives and the ways in which social and relational conditions of inequality shape and are resisted through desire.
