What is it about?

A pilot program aimed at increasing cultural awareness using a developmentally appropriate group intervention. This 3-week manualized program was administered on two separate occasions to two groups of male adolescents housed in a secure facility. The findings showed a significant increase in cultural awareness within the group who differed in terms of self-identified race but not within the group who endorsed similar racial identities.

Why is it important?

Research indicates that increasing cultural awareness in adolescents may improve their relationships with peers of a different race or ethnicity. Few studies to date examine methods for improving intergroup relations in juvenile detention facilities in which racial tension often leads to de facto segregation, bullying, and violence.

Perspectives

This study is aimed at helping create more meaningful interventions for juvenile offenders, as well as to supplement the small body of research informing relations between youth of color within detention facilities.
