What is it about?

Little is known about the specific needs and barriers of Indian women who seek treatment for addictions. We provide an overview of the themes that emerged from interviews of mental health experts, patients and their caregivers. The interviews led to planning of a psychotherapy program for residential and/or outpatient care that is culturally sensitive, gender specific and trauma informed.

Why is it important?

The research provides insights into planning and implementing adequate psychological care for women with addictions and their families. It is the first of its kind in India and amongst the first in treatment - seeking populations around the world.

Perspectives

This paper is part of my PhD work and I hope it provides readers with an understanding of the needs of Indian women with addiction. A majority of patients and their significant others had no exposure to psychotherapy. Despite this, bringing in consumers to make decisions about treatment proved useful in tailoring it to their specific needs. I hope that the study provokes thought, further study and implementation among women all over India.
