What is it about?

Thirteen mental health providers were interviewed about the factors that influence their ability to sustain an evidence-based intervention for youth mental health disorders. The providers reported that they were influenced by their personal experiences of client improvement and belief that the intervention provided relative advantage to their clients, their sense of increased competency and clinical knowledge, and by the interventions goodness of fit with their own training or client characteristics. They also reported that ongoing supervision from experts would help them to sustain the practice, as well as quality assurance.

Why is it important?

Major efforts are underway to scale up evidence-based interventions in youth mental health, yet little is known about the factors that allow these interventions to be sustained over time. Without sustainment, costly efforts to implement interventions are unlikely to have much clinical impact.

Perspectives

It is great to hear directly from mental health providers in their own words what will help or hinder their ongoing use of evidence-based practices.
