What is it about?

This study explored how taking a break from digital devices, known as a digital detox, affects people. The researchers interviewed five women and two men who had tried digital detoxes. They found two main themes: (1) people trying to limit their digital use and (2) people striving to be their ideal selves. People took breaks from digital technology because they felt it didn't align with how they wanted to be. They saw digital tech, like smartphones and social media, as a threat to their values and self-esteem. While a digital detox helped them feel more in line with their ideal selves, many still relied on technology for work and social connections.

Why is it important?

The study suggests that it's important for people to understand the benefits of digital tech, even if they take breaks from it, as complete abstinence may not be realistic in today's world

Perspectives

For people who experience a lot of anxiety about their excessive connectivity, I think this article offers reassurance. Firstly they are not alone in feeling worried about their use, and secondly perhaps considering the positive impacts of digital media on their work and daily lives may both inform their ideal use and make them feel less worried.
