What is it about?
Soild-transmitted helminthiasis are a major health problem in developing countries, and can be associated with poor educational outcomes, but how do helminths affect cognition? This paper examines whether helminths affect cognitive development in children. We find that helminthiasis predicts poorer verbal comprehension, working memory, and processing speed, all functions which are relevant for the development of higher thought.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that a neglected disease that is caused by poor sanitation can negatively impact the ontogenesis of cognitive functions which are very important for the development of metacognition and higher thought.
Perspectives
Writing this article was an interesting step towards a better understanding of how an "ecosocial niche" can affect trajectories of development. It was also very interesting to work with a multidisciplinary team.
