What is it about?
Here, we provide a meta-analytic assessment of 25 randomized controlled trials, and summarize cannabis-related pain reduction and placebo-related pain reduction across studies.

Why is it important?
Pain, and opioid-based medicines used to treat pain, are associated with a rising economic burden in the United States. As such, add-on or alternative therapeutic options are desired. Cannabinoids have shown promise regarding pain management.
Perspectives
Although our meta-analysis results suggest that cannabinoids are efficacious pain management options, more research is needed. For example, our follow-up meta-regression results revealed that study sample size was associated with observed pain reduction, such that smaller samples were associated with bigger effects. Thus, large (i.e., sufficiently powered) studies are warranted.
